A Teams backup fails with an error message.

"Failed to populate hosted content for conversation item"

Publish the Microsoft app that you used to back up the posts on Teams.

  1. To request access to the protected API in Microsoft Graph, go to the Request access to protected APIs in Microsoft Graph form, and update the required app information. For steps to fill the form, see the instructions at the bottom of this article.
  2. Wait till you receive the email of form approval by Microsoft.

Resolution for Command Center

  1. Publish the Microsoft app that you used to back up the posts on Teams.
    • To request access to the protected API in Microsoft Graph, go to the Request access to protected APIs in Microsoft Graph form, and update the required app information. For steps to fill the form, see the instructions at the bottom of this article.
    • Wait till you receive the email of form approval by Microsoft.
  2. On the access node, add the iTeamsUseProtectedAPIs additional setting and set its value to 1, as shown in the following table. For instructions about adding additional settings, see Adding or Modifying an Additional Setting.

  1. To run backup for a specific client only, create the additional setting client1_iTeamsUseProtectedAPIs, and set its value to 1.
Instructions to Fill the Microsoft Graph Form:
  1. Write your email address (it should be a tenant email ID).
  2. Select Yes.
  3. In the Publisher name box, write the tenant company name.
  4. In the App name box, write the semicolon-separated app names, such as, App1;App2.
  5. Write the semicolon-separated app ID, such as, 7054f33-74a8-4e75-8fbe-d26987f883dd; 32882231-2ff8-4711-8f75-2c70d9f38277
  6. Write - "The app is used for data protection and information management software applications and products".
  7. Write - "The app is used as a vital extension of the protection native to O365 applications. To provide enhanced data protection to the Microsoft environments, it is necessary to have read access to all the messages in the tenant. This will provide the functionality such as point-in-time recovery, granular restores, and long-term retention".
  8. Select the second option - "It is obvious to any admin installing this app that it will make a copy of Microsoft Teams messages".
  9. Write the tenant directory ID, such as, 22c2134-03ww-43b7-abfe-7879478a67c0.
  10. Select Yes.
