After an out-of-place recovery without recovery operation, the .edb file is not located in the user-defined destination folder.

Symptoms

Applies to: Upgrades to Version 11 before Service Pack 5

After an out-of-place recovery without recovery operation, the .edb file is not located in the user-defined destination folder.

The following error message might appear in the Microsoft Event Viewer snap-in:

Exchange VSS Writer failed restoring a backup with error code -2147024894 when renaming 'E:\Restore\Restore.EDB' to 'E:\Restore\restore.edb'.

Causes

If an Exchange database .edb file extension is in uppercase (that is, .EDB), then the backup phase might place the .edb file in the wrong index cache path. In the case of an out-of place restore, this causes the recovered .edb file to be placed in the default job results directory. In the case of an in-place restore, the job fails.

Resolution

We recommend that you upgrade your Commvault software to Service Pack 5 or later. Otherwise, you can copy the recovered .edb file to the correct folder.

  1. Restore the database to an out-of-place location without recovery.
  2. Navigate to the Job Results directory on the Exchange client.
  3. Copy the .edb file, and then paste it into the folder where the log files were restored.
