Application-consistent backups of virtual machines on Netapp SMB (Server Message Block Protocol) storage fails with the error code: [91:113]: Unable to read the disk.

Symptoms

Application-consistent backups of virtual machines on Netapp SMB storage fail with the following error message:

Error Code: [91:113] Description: Unable to read the disk  [ ] for virtual machine [ ] on Host [ ]. [Permission denied, Open failed, File= , Mode=r+b (ErrNo.13)].

Causes

When you run an application-consistent backup job, Netapp fails to apply the security permission to the newly created disk that was generated as the result of the VSS checkpoint.

Resolution

Run crash-consistent backups of the virtual machines on the Netapp SMB storage.
