For Microsoft Hyper- V, a backup of shared VHDX disk files produces a "Permission Denied'' error.

Symptoms

For Microsoft Hyper- V, when you back up shared VHDX disk files, you receive the following error:

Permission Denied

Causes

This error occurs because: -- Shared files cannot reside in the root of the cluster shared volume (CSV) due to permission constraints. -- Backups of shared VHD, VHDX or VHD Set files are not supported. Checkpoint operations fail when backing up VMs that are configured with shared disks.

Resolution

To back up shared VHDX disk files, move the files to a folder within the CSV.
