Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 failed to install server features on Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8.1 computers

The Commvault software installs Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 automatically. During the installation, .NET Framework might fail to install server features.

Symptoms

Microsoft ,NET Framework 3.5 fails to install on computers running Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8.1, and reports the following error:

Setup failed to install .NET Framework Server Features. Please use Server Manager to add .Net Framework Features manually.

After .NET Framework is successfully installed, click Setup and resume this installation.

Causes

Known Microsoft issue. Errors may appear if either of the following updates are installed:

Resolution

Install Microsoft update 3005628 or perform the following steps:

  1. Uninstall KB2966828 and KB2966827
  2. Re-run the Commvault component installation job.
  3. Re-install KB2966828 and KB2966827
