Backup or restore fails when a non-default port is specified for vCenter Server

The VMware Virtual Disk Development (VDDK) Kit 5.5 uses the default port 443 to connect to the vCenter Server. If a non-default port is specified to connect to the vCenter Server, VDDK cannot communicate with vCenter, and a backup or restore operation fails.

Symptoms

On a failure to connect to the vCenter Server, the vsbkp.log file might contain an error message such as:

Could not resolve server name for vCenter_server_name

Causes

This is a known issue with VDDK 5.5. For more information, see Backup fails when a non-default port is specified for VMware vCenter Server (2108658).

A non-default port can be specified with the vCenter host name in the Virtual Server Instance Properties (for example, vCenter_host_name:port_number); if no port is entered the default port is used.

Resolution

To prevent this error, either specify the default port 443 to connect to the vCenter Server or, to use a non-default port, manually install VDDK 5.0.3 or an earlier supported version of the VDDK.
