Error Code [10:2] Unable to communicate with the remote machine [vcenter_host_name] to start the Data Pipe

Article ID: VMW0017 When you use Live Browse to view files and folders for a VMware virtual machine, the firewall prevents the File Recovery Enabler for Linux from communicating with the vCenter or ESX server.

Symptom

The following error message is returned during a restore operation:

Error Code: [10:2] Description: Unable to communicate with the remote machine [vcenter_host_name] to start the Data Pipe. Please check the network connectivity between the local machine and the remote machine and verify this product's Communications Service is running on the remote machine. Source: vm_name, Process: clRestore "

The following error displays in the FBR.log file:

FBRContext::attachDisks() - Caught Exception … [... vmdk : open failed. Lib Error Cannot connect to the host]

Cause

If a firewall is in place, ports must be opened to enable communication between the File Recovery Enabler and the vCenter, ESX server, or both. 

Resolution

Open ports 902 and 443 or user-defined ports between the File Recovery Enabler and the ESX server.

Open port 443 or a user-defined port between the File Recovery Enabler and the vCenter.
