Volume-level restore operations fail for block-level backups.

Symptoms

Volume-level restore operations for block-level backups may fail with the following error:

Failed to freeze target volume

Causes

The error occurs because the restore operation is unable to lock the destination volume where the data needs to be restored. Possible causes might include:

• There are active snapshots on the destination volume.
• Destination volume is in an open state.
• Destination volume has live application data, such as Exchange Database.
• Exchange System Manager is open while trying to restore exchange data.

Resolution

Make sure that you identify and resolve the possible causes before you start the restore operation.
