Error Code 23:10 Error while reading pipeline buffer from MediaAgent

Data Management operation fails for VMware client with invalid buffer error.

Symptoms

Backup or Restore or Auxiliary Copy jobs fails with following event message:

This Client is VMware hosted Windows 2012 and has Network adopter [Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection]. It may corrupt the Network buffer. It is suggested to change VMware-network adapter to VMXNet3.

Cvd.log file for the Data Mover MediaAgent may contain the following entries

Cannot decode packet header: invalid start signature

Error Code 23:10 Error while reading pipeline buffer from MediaAgent

[UNCOMPRESS ] #UNCOMPRESSION ERROR

Causes

The data corruption may occur when the source computer has one of the following configurations:

• a Windows 2012 virtual machine that was created using ESX Server version 5.x with e1000e as network adapter. This is a known issue with the ESX Server. For more information, see http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2058692.
• a Windows 2008/2012 virtual machine with e1000 network adapter.

Resolution

Change the network adapter of the virtual machine to vmxnet3.
