Causes

Multiple networks are used. (Example, Production.net and backup.net).  Client machine does not known the Fully Qualified Domain Name being used for the connecting Network. Network is only known by DNS.

Resolution

Method 1:Add alternate DNS hostname.

On the Virtual Machine

  1. C:>netdom computername [name] /ADD [alternate name]
  2. C:>netdom computername [name] /Enumerate:AllNames

All of the names for the computer are:

[name]

[alternate name]

  1. C:>ipconfig /registerdns

Method 2: Add alternate NetBIOS name.

On the Virtual Machine's registry

  1. Create “OptionalNames” value [String] name under  “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters”
  2. Add an optional name to the value data.
