Guest file restore from Snap backup goes pending with message "Snapshot is currently mounting on a different host"

A granular restore from Snap backup cannot be completed when the proxy used for the restore is different from the proxy that was used for the backup.

Symptoms

During a restore of guest files and folders from a Snap backup, the restore goes pending with the following message:

Snapshot is currently mounting on a different host

Causes

For Snap backups, the best practice is to have the Virtual Server Agent and MediaAgent on the same setup.

When performing a Live Browse of file and folder information from a Snap backup, the snapshot is mounted on the ESX server and the MediaAgent where the backup job was run. The restore operation also attempts to mount the snapshot on the proxy that is used for the restore. If the proxy used for the restore is different from the proxy used for the backup, you receive an error message indicating that the snapshot is already mounted on the proxy where the backup was run.

Resolution

When performing a browse and restore operation, you can ensure that the snapshot is mounted on only one proxy using either of the following methods:

• From the Browse and Restore Options dialog box, click the Advanced Options tab and select a MediaAgent from the Use MediaAgent list. The proxy associated with that MediaAgent will be used for the browse and as the destination client for the restore operations.
• From the Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box, click Advanced, click the Data Path tab, and select the same MediaAgent that was used for the backup from the Use MediaAgent list and the Use Proxy list.
