This article details how to resolve Error Code 91:53 No virtual machines were discovered for this Subclient. Please check the Subclient content.

Symptoms

This issue will arise when running Virtualization Agent backups on subclients/groups that have defined content or defined filters.

Causes

Content Definitions

Check the content for this subclient/group and verify that there are vms that will be picked up based on the content definitions.

Filter overriding Content

If there are any filters defined, they will override the content definitions.  As an example, if there is a filter defined by certain tags and those tags apply to the machines the Content definitions should collect, then the backup will not see any virtual machines to back up.

Data Store Locations

When we discover content, we pick up VMs based on the location of their configuration files, which may be on other datastores.

Resolution

Content Definitions

Edit the content as needed to ensure your machines are backed up.

Filter overriding Content

Remove or edit any filter that is blocking these machines from being collected.

For details on content and filter definitions, review this content.

Data Store Locations

Check on the hypervisor side to see if the VMs are using the specified stores as their primary datastores. The vms might be using the datastores as secondary disks attached to the VM.
