Multiple backups fail, generally from the same Media Agent with error code 80:36 No more allocated streams are available.

Symptoms

This error occurs when multiple jobs are running at the same time.  It's common for an Auxiliary Copy to be among these jobs.

Causes

As the error indicates, the maximum number of streams allocated for this job to utilize are in use by the  other running jobs.

For backup operations, streams are set for the Client, Media Agent, and the Storage Policy.  When any of those thresholds is exceeded, the job will not run:

Aux Copies will often use a large number of streams preventing backup jobs from running to the same Storage Policy which is why they are commonly involved with this error.

Resolution

To resolve the error, either wait for jobs to complete (freeing up streams/resources) or modify the threshold that has been met. Note: Your environment was likely set up to maximize efficiency and resource utilization.  Changing these thresholds should not be done lightly.  Asking more of your hardware could make matters worse, not better.  It is best to review the Streams Overview section on our documentation first.

Depending on the issue, review the stream count set at the corresponding level:

Client (Windows File System as an example) Media Agent thresholds (Parallel Data Transfers) Storage Policy thresholds (Data Streams)
