DataServer-IP is a feature that allows sharing of mount paths when they are not sharable by traditional means, or by simplifying the configuration by automating the sharing across several mount paths and media agents. This article will outline the best practices when leveraging DataServer-IP for mount path sharing.
Best Practices
DataServer-IP works best when each media agent has one or more locally accessible mount paths available for writes. This allows backup jobs to write over a local path rather than be redirected over the network to another Media Agent.
DataServer-IP can help with automating configuration of mount path sharing, allowing paths to be shared via Commvault rather than through the Operating system.
What to avoid
DataServer-IP is not a replacement for NAS device shares. Do not use DataServer-IP to re-share mount paths already backed by NFS or SMB protocols. For best performance when a NAS device is in use, connect the the NFS or SMB mount path to all Media Agents instead of using DataServer-IP.
Configuring DataServer-IP for read/write access is not recommended for production workloads due to scale and performance. Best performance is achieved when each Media Agent has direct access to one or more mount paths for writes, with only reads occurring over DataServer-IP.
