When there is an existing clone operation running on the NetApp storage array's LUNs due to restore with revert for Oracle or backup copy operation for Microsoft Hyper-V and if you attempt to execute IntelliSnap backup operations using those NetApp cluster mode LUNs, the snap backup may fail with the following error in the cvma.log (Microsoft Hyper-V) or ClOragent.log (Oracle) files:

Snapshot operation not allowed due to clones backed by snapshots

Symptoms

When performing an IntelliSnap backup using NetApp cluster mode LUNs, the backup fails with the following error:

The provider was unable to perform the request at this time. The job will go to pending state and will be retried.

Causes

This failure happens if an existing operation (clone creation or the clone splitting) is running on the NetApp file server side, typically of a large LUN. The intelliSnap backup attempt cannot continue until the existing operation is completed and must be retried after an appropriate interval (for example, 60 seconds).

Resolution

You can configure additional settings to set the number of times the backup operation is retried (snapshot retry count) and the time interval in seconds between retries (snapshot retry interval).
