A client with name [client_name] already exists but was previously configured with the host name [fully_qualified_hostname] at CVD Port [0].

Last Modified:

To display the virtual machine status correctly, run a script that deletes GUIDs for upgraded VM clients.

Symptoms

Backup jobs for VMware virtual machines complete successfully, but protected virtual machines are not shown in the Backup Job Summary report when the Include Protected VMs option is selected, or are not shown in the Virtual Machine Status tab of the Job Details dialog box.

For each subclient that has missing virtual machines, the vsdiscovery log contains the following entry:

A client with name [client_name] already exists but was previously configured with the host name [fully_qualified_hostname] at CVD Port [0]. Would you like to proceed with the installation and use the new host name [fully_qualified_hostname] and CVD Port [0]?

Causes

This issue occurs after upgrading from version 9.0 to version 10.0, when the UUID for a virtual machine does not map to the BIOS UUID that was used to identify the virtual machine in version 9.0.

Resolution

Run the following script to reset the virtual machine client properties so that the original BIOS GUID will be used during virtual machine discovery:

  1. Identify the virtual machine clients that are named in error messages in the vsdiscovery log, as indicated in the Symptoms section.
  2. Log in to the CommServe host using qlogin.
  3. For each virtual machine client that displays the indicated error, run the following script from a command prompt on the CommServe host:

qoperation execscript -sn QS_DeleteVirtualMachineGUIDs  –si  ‘client_name

For example:

qoperation execscript -sn QS_DeleteVirtualMachineGUIDs  –si  ‘myClient’ 4. Run an incremental backup and confirm that the Virtual Machine Status tab is populated correctly.

After running the script and performing a new incremental or full backup, the VM status will be displayed correctly for the next backup job.
